(August 13, 2007)--Dallas police say a former University of New Mexico football player has been killed at a nightclub in Texas.

Sgt. Gene Reyes says 26-year-old Brandon Ratcliff was being a peacekeeper in a fight when he was shot Sunday.

He died at a Dallas hospital.

Reyes says Ratcliff was trying to break up a fight between two groups inside the bar.

Police say security guards broke it up and patrons moved to the parking lot.

Officers say a man involved in the fight pointed an assault rifle at the crowd, then another man grabbed it and opened fire.

Ratcliff played for the Lobos in 2000 and in 2002 through 2003.

He was a first-team All Mountain West Conference selection at safety in his junior and senior seasons.
