WACO, Texas – Mary Bisenius and Lauren Cummings each tallied 13 kills as Iowa State defeated Baylor 3-0 (30-23, 30-27, 31-29) on Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center.

“It’s funny because it seems like we play better away than we do at home,” said head coach Jim Barnes. “We are a very young team, and it seemed like we just got nervous playing in front of our home crowd. Tonight was a tough match; I think that we were a little tense and tried too hard instead of relaxing and playing our game.”

Iowa State (7-4, 1-0 Big 12) got out to an early start in game one and never looked back as they finished off Baylor in three games. The Bears never led in games one or three, and held the lead just once in game two.

“We were really optimistic coming off a good tournament last weekend,” said Barnes. “Iowa State did exactly what we told the girls: serve short and tip on their attacks. We were just not passing well tonight and that put us in a bad position. Once we did get a good pass they knew exactly where we wanted to go.”

Sarah Grace (Houston, Texas) led all players with 25 digs, while Modglin recorded a game-high eight total blocks.

The 25 digs mark a new Baylor record for a three-game match. The previous record of 22 digs was set on five different occasions, including three times by Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas), with the most recent occurrence last season against Houston.

Haley Thomas (Jewett, Texas) led the way for the Bears with 12 kills. Anna Breyfogle (Buda, Texas) connected on seven kills with only one hitting error (.353) and Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas) added five kills and no hitting errors (.385).

Baylor (7-4, 0-1 Big 12) outblocked the Big 12’s top blocking team, but Iowa State placed three players in double-digit digs, led by Ashley Mass with 17, to hold a 60-56 dig advantage.

“From the beginning of the match we just didn’t come out the way we wanted,” said Grace. “Our confidence just wasn’t there from last weekend. But we will just have to learn from it and take what we learned to Kansas State on Saturday.”

Baylor returns to action on Saturday as the Bears play their first conference road match at Kansas State at 1 p.m. at Ahearn Field House
