(February 16, 2014) Baylor baseball dropped a 12-1 decision to No. 19 Arizona State on Sunday afternoon at Packard Stadium. The Bears (1-2) allowed a nine-hit, nine-run sixth inning to the Sun Devils (2-1) to lead to a season-opening series defeat.
ASU grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second after an error led to a run. Baylor then bounced back in the sixth to tie it as Lawton Langford singled to start the frame, stole second and scored on Duncan Wendel’s single.
However, the Sun Devils answered in a large way in the bottom half of the sixth with nine runs on nine hits. Christopher Beall had a pair of RBI singles in the inning, while Brian Serven had a two-run double to help fuel the rally. ASU added two more in the seventh, and Baylor was unable to mount any sort of comeback like it did in the first two games of the series.
ASU reliever Zak Miller (1-0) earned the win after throwing two innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout. BU reliever Drew Tolson (0-1) took the loss after surrendering four runs (three earned) on three hits and a walk in 0.2 innings.
