Seeded fifth in the tournament and ranked No. 6 in the country, Burgic earned a victory against senior Hanna Mar of Duke, 7-5, 6-2.
Meanwhile, Burgic and teammate Victoria Kisialeva faltered in first-round doubles action. The BU tandem, ranked No. 5 and seeded fourth, automatically advanced to the round of 16 with a bye in first-round play. In the second round, the BU duo lost to No. 20 Robin Anderson and Jennifer Brady of UCLA, 8-4.
“Ema competed hard today. Her focus improved as the match went on and it was a great win for her," said Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano.
