Last Roundup For 1948 Waco High Title Team

WACO (April 30, 2013) -- Its not a meeting of the local VFW or the Rotary club. This meeting of elderly men is the last to win a football state title at Waco High School.

"We meet every five years and we call this one our last roundup because everybody's getting up in years. So, we're calling it quits," said Floyd Miller.
"We've already lost quite a few of us. The thing that's so unique about this whole outfit, we all grew up as kids together," said Arlen Jumper.

Together the group went undefeated in 1948 beating Amarillo in the state title game on Christmas day. But those aren't the memories this group talks about.

"We don't talk about football or anything like that," said Jumper. "We talk about the things that happened during our growing up together, things that happened at school or summer."
"Everybody looks different, everybody's changed, everybody's put on a few pounds," said Miller. "How the football players look nowadays compared to us. We didn't have any weight rooms, we didn't have a thing. We just went out and played football. Nowadays these guys, we couldn't carry their water buckets for them."

Waco High made it back to the state title game in 2006, and the members of the 1948 team made the trip to San Antonio.

"We wished the team good luck, and hope they win the state title. But Johnny Tusa was coaching then, they fell short, but we were pulling for them, we really were," said Miller.

The Lions fell to La Marque and it's been 65 years since the last title.

"We take a lot of pride being the last team but I didn't think it would last this long, you know, 65 years surely I thought Waco High would win another state championship," said Miller.

For one final time, this group of champions shares its memories together at its last roundup.
