The McLennan Highlanders closed out the McLennan Classic with an 83-66 win over the Panola Ponies Saturday at The Highlands.
The game was tit-for-tat until the midway point of the first half. McLennan held the 17-16 lead and used an 11-2 run over six minutes to take the 28-18 lead with 5:38 remaining in the half. The Highlanders held the 37-27 lead at the break.
The Ponies cut the lead to seven early in the second half. McLennan pulled away, extending the lead to 21 with 13:09 to play in the game. Panola trimmed the lead to 13 with just under seven minutes to go but was unable to pull any closer.
Freshman Jalen Jones led the way for the Highladers with 15 points. Deondre Ray and Tevin Hanner scored 12 points each. Shawn Prudhomme, Joe Lundy and Wayne Langston all added 10.
In women's action, the McLennan Highlassies stomped the Angelina Lady Roadrunners 104-77.
The teams traded baskets for the first two minutes of play. McLennan broke the game open with a 12-0 run, taking the 16-6 lead with 15:49 to play in the first half. The Highlassies continued to pull away and led 53-29 at halftime.
Angelina opened the second half on a 7-0 run but it wasn't enough to overcome the McLennan offense.The Highlassies combined for 12 3-pointers in the game as they cruised to the easy victory.
Rae'Vaughn Barnes led McLennan with 19 points. Shanice Davis and Sha'de Adedapo scored 16 points each. Kendra Wynn added 12.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday. The Highlassies travel to Houston to face San Jacinto at 5:30 p.m. The Highlanders will host Angelina at 7 p.m.
