No. 5 Baylor WT Rides Singles to Win Over No. 9 UVA

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (February 13, 2012) – One night after pulling one of the biggest upsets in program history, Baylor earned another comeback win with a 4-2 victory over No. 9 Virginia in consolation action on Sunday at the ITA Women’s Team Indoor Championship in Charlottesville, Va.

Baylor’s 1-0 deficit against the Cavaliers was much smaller than the 3-0 hole it faced one day prior, but the Lady Bears treated their opponent much the same. Having lost the doubles point for the third match in a row, BU once again dominated singles play to earn the win. The victory also avenged a 4-3 loss to the Cavaliers in the Round of 16 of the same tournament last season.

“The ladies really put it on the line tonight,” head coach Scrivano. “Great teams play tough in back-to-back nights, and we finished really strong. It showed a ton of great character from this team, and we were able to show we can perform consistently at a high level. After losing to Virginia in such a tough match here last year, it was great to come out here and get a huge road win. This weekend, we made some big steps forward in trying to find our identity.”

Baylor earned singles wins on Courts 2-5, including a match-finishing tiebreak win from freshman Ema Burgic. It marked the second consecutive night that the rookie earned the clinching point.

Virginia came out firing in doubles, earning an 8-0 win on Court 1 and an 8-2 win on Court 3, but Baylor’s singles took charge right away. The Lady Bears took the first set on five of six courts and were well on their way to another comeback win.

First, sophomore Maryland transfer Jordaan Sanford, playing against her former ACC foes, breezed through a 6-3, 6-1 win on Court 4 over No. 85 Hana Tomljanovic. The win moved Sanford to 15-6 on the season, including a 7-2 mark in dual-match singles.

The teams then traded blows with Baylor striking first with a 7-5, 6-2 win by Sona Novakova over Li Xi on Court 3. The Cavaliers’ No. 75 Erin Vierra followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Megan Horter on Court 6 to make it 2-2 overall.

From there it was all Baylor, as Nina Secerbegovic posted a 6-2, 7-5 win that ended with her taking four consecutive games over No. 30 Lindsey Hardenbergh. Burgic then followed with her clinching victory, taking a 6-1, 7-6(3) win over No. 89 Caryssa Peretz.

The Lady Bears will now have a seven-day break before hosting No. 4 UCLA at noon on Sunday, Feb. 19. Baylor split two matches against the Bruins last season, winning on a neutral court 4-2 and falling 6-1 in Los Angeles.
