(June 11, 2014) A nearly 100-year-old tradition in Texas is coming to an end.
The UIL has approved a plan that will move the state basketball tournament out of Austin for the first time since 1921.
The Alamodome in San Antonio will serve as the host of the tournament in 2015, but an official announcement is pending approval by the facility.
The state tournament has been held in Austin for the past 93 years, but the South by Southwest Festival, which overlaps with the tournament, has casued hotel prices to soar and attendance at the tournament to drop.
Baylor's Ferrell Center was also a possible replacement site, but the move to San Antonio will be complete once final approval is given by the Alamodome.
The UIL legislative council also discussed possible football state championship venues. After discussion with the Legislative Council, UIL staff was authorized to move forward with soliciting proposals to give qualified venues the opportunity to compete to host the football championships beginning in 2016 for multiple years.
Qualified facilities will have the opportunity to compete for the championships and decisions will be made based on the proposals submitted.
