Sandestin, Florida (October 14, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team improved by two strokes but dropped two spots in the team standings on the second day of the Golfweek Division III Fall Preview Monday in Florida. The UMHB women have a 317-315=632 team total and sit in sixth place after two rounds of the tournament.
Methodist University holds down first place with a 296-304=600, eight strokes ahead of second place Washington-St. Louis’ 314-294=608. Trinity University is in third place with a 309-313=622, U.T.-Tyler moved up to fourth place with a 320-305=625 and Rhodes College is in fifth place, three shots ahead of the Cru with a 319-310=619.
There is a 17-team women's field competing in the invitation-only event at the site of the NCAA Division III National Championships and an 18-team field for the men. The three-day, 54-hole event is being played on a par-72, 5,802-yard layout at Baytowne Golf Club in Sandestin, Florida.
Victoria Thane leads the Cru with a 79-74=153 to tie for 11th place. Ashley Garbade is tied for 19th after firing a 78-79=157, Elizabeth Davis is tied for 23rd place at 77-81=158, Kelly Gonyea is tied for 47th with an 83-81=164 and Taylor O’Rear is tied for 51st place with an 84-81=165. Loretta Giovannettone of Methodist University has the individual lead at 72-75=147.
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s golf team posted yet another sub-300 round but the Cru men dropped three spots in the team standings after the second round of the Golfweek Division III Fall Preview Monday in Florida. The UMHB men posted a 295 team total on Monday and have a two-day total of 294-295=589.
Oglethorpe has the overall lead with a 284-279=563 total, 10 shots better than second place LaGrange College’s 286-287=573. Rhodes College (287-295) and Methodist University (294-288) are tied for third place with 582’s. St. John Fisher rounds out the top five at 292-291=583. There is a three-way tie for sixth place at 585 among Guilford College (295-290), Illinois Wesleyan (296-289) and Centre College (292-293).
Robby Schimmels and Stayton Lindeman have the top two scores for the UMHB men. Schimmels (74-72) and Lindeman (72-74) are tied for 22nd place individually with 146 totals. Jarrod Brown (77-75) and Justin Judkins (77-75) are both tied for 58th place after carding 152’s and Pablo Mena Medrano is tied for 65th place with a 71-82=153 score. Cory Howard of LaGrange College has the individual lead after posting a 71-66=137.
The tournament runs through Tuesday. The UMHB women will begin teeing off in Tuesday’s Final Round at 8:45 AM. The UMHB men will begin teeing off at 8:00 AM.
