(December 5, 2013) The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team grabbed a 106-79 victory over Sul Ross State University Thursday evening in Belton to open American Southwest Conference action at 1-0. The win improves the Cru to 1-3 overall on the season while the Lobos fall to 1-5 overall and open conference play at 0-1.
The Lobos opened play with a 20-10 lead before UMHB went on a 40-18 run to end the half with a 50-38 lead. Taylor Tucker came off the bench, scoring 16 of the Cru’s 40 rally points. Momentum did not let up in the second half as the Cru put up 56 points, shooting 51.1 percent from the floor. The Cru’s 106 points tied a nine-year-old Division III era school-record for points in a game. The previous record was set against Schreiner University on Feb. 19, 2004.
Tucker led four Crusaders with double-digit points, putting up 25 in 17 minutes played. Alyssa Dean scored 16 points while Bridjai Chaney and Macy Moore each added 13. Chaney and Tucker completed double-doubles, bringing down 12 and 11 rebounds respectively. Destini Oakmon recorded seven assists in the match followed by Chantal Franco’s six. Franco and Dean led the Cru to 15 team steals with four each. UMHB totaled 72 rebounds and shot 48.9 percent in the game.
Gabriela Aguilar, Mercedes Orozco and Ashley Ousley each scored double-digits for Sul Ross State at 12, 12 and 11 points respectively. Aguilar was also the team’s leading rebounded with six. Amanda Garza and Rhiana Michou each recorded three steals en route to a team-total 17. Sul Ross State totaled 31 rebounds and shot 31.4 percent in the game.
The Cru will return to action Saturday in a 4:30 p.m. match against Howard Payne University in Belton.
