(December 14, 2013) The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team grabbed an 84-77 victory over Concordia Texas Saturday afternoon in Austin. The win improves the Cru to 2-4 on the season and 2-1 in American Southwest Conference action while the Tornados move to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
The Tornados lead by as many as five points before the Cru tied up the game halfway through the first half. UMHB used a 6-0 run to gain leverage on the Tornados, allowing no-more than a three-point Tornados lead before responding with a 5-2 run in to grab a 44-41 halftime advantage. The game remained a back-and-forth competition before the Cru used an 8-0 run to grab a six-point lead on the Tornados and held that lead to secure the win.
Taylor Tucker led four athletes in double-digit points with a 26-point performance. Jonelle Smith, Macy Moore and Alyssa Dean each added 14 points. Tucker was also the leading rebounder for the Cru with 17 boards while Bridjai Chaney brought down 16. Chantal Franco recorded a team-high five assists while Alisha Mosley and Chaney added two steals each. UMHB outrebounded the Tornados 67-35, shooting 36 percent in the contest and 41.7 percent from beyond the arc.
The Tornados were led by Tyler Compton’s 33 points while Domonique Liddell added 15 and Margaret Milling added 13. Compton led both teams with seven assists while Milling added six. Defensively, Liddell brought down a team-high 12 boards and blocked six shots. The Tornados shot 37.8 percent in the contest and 64.0 percent from the free throw line.
The Cru will return to action Thursday, Dec. 19th with a 5:30 p.m. match at Louisiana College and compete in a series of four road games. UMHB returns home Tuesday, January 7th with a 5:30 p.m. match against the Tornados.

UMHB broke away with an 8-0 run four minutes into the game to grab a lead, leading by as many as 12 points in the first half and taking an 11-point lead into halftime. The Cru held that lead for 12 minutes of the second half before the Tornados responded with an offensive surge, tying the game at 76-76. The Tornados did not let up, using a 20-17 run to secure the 96-93 win over the Cru.
Jerard Graham led the Cru with 26 points while Antonie Chaney added 21, James Allen added 16 and Kitrick Bell put up 15. Graham was also the leading rebounded for the Cru, bringing down eight boards en route to a team-total 31. Layton Zinsmeister recorded six assists and James Allen added two steals. The Cru shot 55 percent in the game and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Josh Sanchez led the Tornados with 27 points while Dwayne Patterson added 25 and Andre Potts recorded 24. Potts led the Tornados with 11 rebounds en route to a team-total 30. Sanchez led all teams with ten assists while the Tornados added six team steals. Concordia shot 58.9 percent in the game and 51.9 percent from beyond the arc.
The Cru will return to action Thursday, Dec. 19th with a 7:30 p.m. match at Louisiana College and compete in a series of four road games. UMHB returns home Tuesday, January 7th with a 7:30 p.m. match against the Tornados.
