HOUSTON (June 20, 2009)--State officials are concerned that at least 50 children in Texas have already drowned this year before the official start of summer.
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services said there were seven drownings in the past week alone.
Agency spokesman Patrick Crimmins said many of the recent victims didn't appear to have been adequately supervised.
Two boys drowned in Texas on Thursday.
One was a Texas City toddler who died in his family’s pool even though several teenagers were home at the time.
Authorities told the Houston Chronicle that the teens were swimming in a 4-feet-deep, aboveground pool before the 18-month-old died.
The teens went back inside and the toddler evidently slipped out and climbed a ladder into the water.
