EL DORADO, KAN. (June 26, 2009)—Israel Mireles, who was arrested in Mexico just across the border from Texas in the murder of a Kansas college coed who led a double life as an Internet porn star has made his first court appearance.

Mireles, who was arrested in December 2007 in Melchor Muzquiz, Mexico, about five miles southwest of Del Rio, is charged with capital murder, rape and aggravated criminal sodomy in the 2007 death of Emily Sander, 18.

Prosecutors asked for high bond and told the court that while Mireles was in jail in Mexico City, he told a friend he had planned an escape by faking a serious illness and then escaping when he was taken to a hospital.

Sander's disappearance drew nationwide attention after the discovery that the Butler, Kan. Community College student was also an Internet pornography model who went by the name Zoey Zane.

She was last seen alive on Nov. 23, 2007 as she left an El Dorado bar with a man police have identified as Mireles.

A car rented by Mireles later turned up in Vernon, Texas, where he has relatives.
