AUSTIN (July 9, 2009)--Two members of a panel that’s advising the state on curriculum standards say civil rights leaders Cesar Chavez and Thurgood Marshall are given too much attention in Texas social studies classes.

Chavez was a Hispanic labor leader, while Marshall argued the landmark case that resulted in racial desegregation and was the first black U.S. Supreme Court justice.

They have schools, libraries and parks named after them across Texas and the nation, but panel members Peter Marshall and David Barton say they don't measure up to such figures as Benjamin Franklin.

Marshall is an evangelical minister; Barton founded Wallbuilders, which promotes religion's role in the nation's founding.

They advise the State Board of Education, which is taking recommendations as it prepares to write new public school social studies curriculum standards.

How about our confederate soldiers who died defending what they believed in. That's history isn't it? Or do they just want to cram what they want to down our throats?
