DAYTON (November 2, 2009)—The search resumed Monday in Liberty County for a livestock herder who disappeared while moving cattle near the rain-swollen Trinity river.

Boats were used in the search Sunday.

Dayton police said three men were herding cattle Sunday afternoon to get the livestock to higher ground, as the river’s level rose.

Authorities said one of the men rode away from the other two to get behind some cattle.

Police Chief Pete Douzat said 45-year-old Gene Roberts was last
seen riding his horse into a wooded area.

His horse was later discovered with the reins tangled in some tree branches.

Search efforts were suspended for the night at around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
