MIAMI (November 11, 2009)—A fire that damaged the only school in the small Texas Panhandle town of Miami and forced officials to cancel classes until Friday.

Supt. Donna Gill told The Associated Press Wednesday that the fire was traced to an electrical problem in the school's concession stand.

Gill said an employee arrived before classes started Tuesday, smelled smoke and summoned help.

Nobody was injured, but Gill estimates the damage at about $400,000.

The school has 176 students.

Gill says pre-kindergarten through 5th grade will resume Friday in an area that wasn't damaged by fire.

Sixth-graders through high school seniors won’t return until Monday.

Gill says Friday night's football game between Miami and Amherst will go on as scheduled in Kress.

Miami is a town of about 575, about 75 miles northeast of Amarillo and near the Texas border with Oklahoma.
