BEAUMONT (November 20, 2009)—A man shot by a Beaumont School District police officer during an altercation Friday near the campus of an alternative school later died in a Beaumont hospital.
The district announced the death in a statement issued by Beaumont school Superintendent Carrol Thomas that says police Sgt. Don Gordon shot the man in self-defense.
“While making his routine check near the Paul Brown and Pathway schools, Sgt. Don Gordon came upon a disturbance. Upon preparing to investigate, he was attacked by an unknown black male. According to Police Chief Clydell Duncan, the officer had no recourse but to pull his weapon and defend himself. The subject was fatally wounded,” the statement said.
Justice of the Peace Vi McGinnis said Matthew Scott, 26, Beckett was shot once in the chest and once in the abdomen.
District officials say students weren't involved in the shooting.
The school district statement says Gordon has been placed on administrative leave pending completion of an investigation.

I'm glad the Police Officer shot and killed the attacker!! One less robber/murderer/rapist/ thief/crook!!! And the Officer had every right to do so!!! PERIOD!!!
Think about this, NUNYA. The attacker knowingly attacked a presumedly uniformed peace officer. The officer is trained to respond with the appropriate level of force to protect himself and to prevent escalation. If you leave the officer no option, the responsibility lies with the party on the offensive. If you were attacked suddenly and believed your life to be in danger, would you pick one of the two options that are effective on MOST people, on the option with the 100% effective rate when properly applied. No mention of bystanders injured, so it appears that the officer applied the properly applied the appropriate amount of force. The fact that this individual will never endanger another person can only be considered a plus. My prayers are with the officer in question.
