HOUSTON (November 24, 2009)—The SUV that trial attorney John O'Quinn was driving was traveling at nearly twice the speed limit in rainy conditions when it crashed, killing O’Quinn.

The Oct. 29 accident on Allen Parkway also killed a passenger, Johnny Cutliff, who worked for O'Quinn.

Police said a data computer from the Chevrolet Suburban indicated the vehicle was traveling at a speed of as much as 79 miles per hour before O’Quinn lost control of the vehicle, which hit a tree.

The speed limit is 40 miles per hour in the area.

Police Capt. Bill Staney told the Houston Chronicle that computer data showed O'Quinn never applied the brakes.

Police say neither victim wore a seat belt.

O'Quinn, who was known for spending on himself, philanthropic causes and Democratic politicians, had a reputation for taking on wealthy corporations.
