SUNNYVALE (December 7, 2009)—The evidence didn’t add up, and now authorities say an elderly deacon who told investigators he slugged it out with robbers to protect the offering of a Dallas-area church lied.

Authorities say they are considering charges against Bill Hammett, 77, for filing a false report over what he initially described an attack at First Baptist Church in Sunnyvale, about 15 miles east of Dallas.

Dallas County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Kim Leach originally said investigators believed that robbers fled after the attack on Nov. 29 with Hammett's wallet and some cash.

But KTVT-TV reports investigators say the evidence did not add up and Hammett allegedly confessed.

He could not immediately be reached for further comment.

First of all, there was only one man, in the entire history of the human race that was perfect and that was Jesus Christ. Therefore, everyone is prone to falling for temptation. For whatever reason, this man did. I say lets give this poor man a second chance. What he did was wrong, but there will be more happen in his life than possibly going to jail; he will probably lose his job as deacon, and face the embarrassment he will feel when he goes to church. It is NOT going to jail that is the real punishment, it is the consequences society places on a person once he or she gets out

Once saved always saved....why not sin....if you are saved, your going to heaven no matter what you do, as long as you take that little swim and say amen....isnt that the teachings of some churches? why read and pray and be good? you will go to heaven as long as you are saved....or do you have to work for your salvation in order to fully receive the blessing of God? and work means...go to church be a good person, read your bible, pray, and teach your children well, follow the commandments, not just the one you choose to follow....oh, wait, that is not the way, just be saved and do as you please.

Read Romans 10:9-10 did not reaqd that a person who lies was not saved. It tells me and you to confess and believe in the Lord, then we are saved. There are consequences for sins. Look and read about what is happening to people all over the world.
