Matt Howerton

Get to know Matt!

Matt has worked in the KWTX newsroom since May of 2012, but is no stranger to the organization, having served as an intern for the station in 2010.

Matt has been nominated for several reporting awards, and was one of the first reporters on the ground in West, Texas, after the deadly fertilizer plant explosion there in April 2013.

In the weeks following the West explosion, Matt covered funeral arrangements for fallen first responders, recovery efforts within the town, and was one of the first reporters to be allowed into the devastation area surrounding the fertilizer plant.

In August of 2012, Matt's investigations surrounding the safety and security efforts inside the McLennan County Jail led to the removal of nearly 50 inmate microwaves and an estimated 175 items from the jail's commissary list.

He was one of the first reporters in the country to sit down and interview two of the climbers involved in a death-defying fall on Mount Rainier in June of 2012 that led to the death of a ranger at Mount Rainier National Park.

Another notable interview Matt conducted included Jeff Kyle, the brother of fallen Navy SEAL Sniper Chris Kyle, who walked 36 miles in 20 hours to honor his brother's heroism.

Matt has also worked on stories surrounding Maj. Nidal Hasan's court-martial.

Before joining KWTX, Matt worked for WFAA-TV in Dallas, Texas, and WABC-TV in New York where he helped produce stories as a part of the "7 On Your Side" investigation team that resulted in thousands of dollars in restitution for consumers.

Matt was born in Ennis where his family still lives, and is a 2012 graduate of Baylor University.

He's always seen Waco as his second home, making countless trips to see his grandparents who chose Waco as their home after WWII in the late 1940's.

Matt will be the first to tell you he is proud to be working with the greatest news team in Central Texas.
