Fort Hood’s III Corps made history Saturday night, deploying to a forward area of operation for the first time since September of 1944.
About 250 soldiers from III Corps said their good byes to family and friends and packed their bags for Iraq. This deployment is but the first of what will be many deployments that will eventually move most of III Corps from Fort Hood to Iraq.
Once in Iraq, III Corps will take over operation command form V Corps who have been in Iraq since the start of the war. For weeks, III Corps has been training for this operation, engaging in full-scale operations designed to recreate situations in Iraq and train soldiers to take command.
III Corps is expected to remain in Iraq for at least a year.
