WASHINGTON (July 3, 2009)—About 4 million inflatable baby floats sold nationwide by major retailers such as Target, Toys ‘R’ Us and Wal-Mart are being recalled because leg straps can tear, causing children to fall into or under the water, posing a drowning risk, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says.
The CPSC says there have been 31 reports of leg straps breaking, but no injuries or deaths have been reported.
The recalled floats were sold from December 2002 through this month in a variety of styles and colors.
Names and model numbers are on the packaging and a date between 08/02 and 07/08 is molded onto the inflation valves.
Products that have the letters “NP” molded on valves are not included in the recall, the CPSC said.
Consumers who have the floats should stop using them and should return them for full refunds, the CPSC said.

I'm glad to hear that parents who've had this occur were responsible and did not use the flotation device as a substitute for proper supervision.
