AUSTIN (October 28, 2009)-Texas prison officials say thousands of high-risk convicts may be vaccinated against the swine flu ahead of the general public.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons and state health officials say more than 45,000 convicts are being considered for the vaccine that could come as early as next week.

Because of their circumstances, the prisoners have been targeted by a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention distribution policy to receive the vaccine.

Officials plan to inoculate more than 40,000 correctional officers and medical personnel who also work with those prisoners and are thus considered to be at high-risk for developing the flu.

Lyons says officials have been told that they'll start receiving doses by around the first of November in lots of 25,000.

What Is Swine Flu?
The current virus is described as a new subtype of swine flu or A/H1N1 not previously detected in swine or humans. The virus combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way researchers have not seen before.

How Is It Transmitted?
People cannot get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Most influenza viruses, including the swine flu virus, are not spread by food. Eating properly handled and cooked pork products is safe. No food safety issues have been identified, related to the flu. Preliminary investigations have determined that none of the people infected with the flu had contact with hogs. The virus is spreading by human-to-human transmission.

Swine Flu Symptoms
Symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of seasonal flu and include:

Fever
Fatigue
Lack of appetite
Coughing
Runny nose
Sore throat
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea

What To Do If You Get Sick
If you are sick, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible to keep from spreading your illness to others. If you become ill and experience any of the following warning signs, seek emergency medical care.

In children emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
Fast breathing or trouble breathing
Bluish skin color
Not drinking enough fluids
Not waking up or not interacting
Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Fever with a rash

In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
Sudden dizziness
Confusion
Severe or persistent vomiting

Steps You Can Take To Stay Healthy
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze
Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
If you get sick with influenza, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them

To Lisa: What part of dead, did you not understand? I hunt them, I take them out. I rather you save your stupid petty for the victims of these thugs. Don't worry about me and the lord's mercy. I expect none! My satisfaction is putting these thugs in a cage for the rest of their time here on earth. The lord can do what he wants up their but down here they pay for crime. I enjoy hunting them down about as much as they enjoy destroying good honest working people! I am a cruel person you see, I show no excuses, I show no remorse, I stop them in their tracks no matter what. I never bow down to these thugs and ready to die trying to protect those you can't protect themselves. Come get some! It is a lonely cruel job that I must do but I will with or without your bleeding heart. So, to all you thugs, I am here and not to far behind you and your wicked ways. Come get some!

Obviously people aren't getting the point or they probably just don't care. Ignorance breeds ignorance. That being said...having worked in the medical dept of criminal justice for the past 5 years I have first hand knowledge of the system. First there is NO CHARGE for H1N1. The vaccines are being given for free. Second, given the close living conditions of inmates if one gets sick then it's like and epidemic and then you have secondary medical conditions that may worsen the symptoms and before you know it you have flooded the ER's and hospitals taking up beds and overextended EMS services. Then the general public goes in to be seen and it takes longer or there are no beds available and they lay in the ER bed for many hours waiting on a bed upstairs when a simple little shot could have prevented this.

Think about it for just a second; if a tree falls in the woods, would it make a sound??? So if this vaccine is given to inmates and they die from it how would anyone know about it? Or better yet, how would they know or not know that the vaccine caused it? It's okay to use your brain sometimes; it's not against the law...yet
