DSHS: Texas Inmates Will NOT Get Swine Flu Vaccine Before General Public
State health officials said Wednesday Texas prisoners are not a priority to get swine flu vaccine and will not be vaccinated ahead of the general public.

To Travis, I thank you. To Sam Bam - I would be more than happy to share my son's crimes. What I believe to be the root of over 50% of America's problem today - DRUGS. NO, he did not rob, kill or steal for them. He went the other way. He was stupid enough to see the "easy money". Am I proud - NO! Before you jump and call him a plain thug, I will go ahead and expand. Just to satisfy your curiosty (or anyone else's) My son is (well, was) extremely smart. Has been to College and was raised in a loving, drug free home. Can I explain what happened? No, I can't. I can only love him as any Mom would and stand by him. Hopefully when he gets to come home he will be much, much wiser!

To Mom: Sorry for the word angle instead of angel. No crime intended. To Travis: While you are impressed and bow down to a mother of a thug, do you think the victims care? Do you know why her baby is in prison? Perhaps, the victims of this thug had their dignity take away or was impressed of how her angel was able to scar them for the rest of their life. Maybe, mom would be proud to tell us what the crime was? I know, lets just forgive all the people who do stupid acts of crime and let them all out. That way we all can enjoy the little angels. I have no respect for offenders or care for mom's or anyone else making excuses for these offenders. I am sure you have a great deal of honest citizens agree with your bleeding heart compassion of ideology. I rather you think before you comment. Sorry, before you respond.

Mom. I dont normally take a side such as yours (the criminal or anyone related to them) mainly cause thats just how I feel. But in this case I do make an exception and I may even start thinking before responses after this (no promises, lol). You handled a lot of negative comments with a great deal of dignity and even a little humor (nice angle). I am impressed and am even giving you a little bow of respect. :)

Having been in the military, a former TDCJ officer and Bell County Jailer, did anyone stop to think how much MORE money will be spent on healtch care and OT on officers if these inmates do get sick? What if the officers get it from sick inmates? Thats a danger to society. Tx is already short hundreds of officers as is. Its cheaper just to vaccinate them... Not taking sides, just trying to save as much of my money as possible in todays economic down slope.

I am the mother of an incarcerated man also and what are most of you people talking about? There are people who are the worst of the worst in prison and then ... there are people who are paying the price for being just plain stupid and won't ever go back there agian. Whatever ... we are still parents of incarcerated sons/daughters and still feel compassion for our fellow human beings. DO YOU??

WOW! What a response and I think most of you took me the wrong way! I AM NOT DEFENDING MY SON! He did what he did and he has to pay the price for that! To Mom,too - I don't think you read what I said - I NEVER said that inmates should be given shots BEFORE others. I think the highest risk should be the FIRST IN LINE! PERIOD. Sam Bam, my son is no angle nor angel either. I am very much aware of this. Anonymous at 1:06pm I have seen exactly what you are talking about and am aware of what goes on - believe me I have NOT been conned. I am not on a horse be it high or otherwise - I was just asking for a little bit of thought before some of the comments were made. Geez..you would have thought that I said the inmates should run for President!

to MOM I spent 20 years working in that dump and have seen it just about ALL!!! i understand that he will ALWAYS be your son, and may even act RESPECTFUL when you see him or are around, but let me tell you as soon as you leave and he is back in the unit he is usually the MOST disrespectful one of the BUNCH !! i have seen inmates say thank as you let them in the church for "SERVICE" and CUSS you out when they walk out!!! prison nowadays is a CAKEWALK, that is WHAT is WRONG with the SYSTEM!!! put the PAIN back in TEXAS prisons and the recidivism rate will DECREASE!! it has to be a DETERRENT or criminals will not care if they GO BACK!!! that is where we are today!! health care for them is FREE if they don't have money on their account and if they do have money it is a WOPPING $ 3.00 co-pay !!! $3.00, you cannot buy a bottle of motrin for $3.00 !!! i pay a $30.00 co-pay to see a DOC on top of a monthly payment for the insurance! so get off YOUR HIGH HORSE MOM and quit enabling your thug!

What I dont understand is why Mom cares what we think about her or her son, especially since none of us know who they are. Why does our opinion count to you? And I do understand the pain the family is going through but ultimately that pain is the responsibility of the offender. They are the ones that put themselves in jail, not us. P.S. Jennica, your right, I am turning the other cheek and I too volunteer your share of the vaccine...:D

To Mom; I understand your little angle is in prison. I have worked as a correctional officer, jailer, peace offficer and now a security/bounty officer. So, let me say that your the one that has not enter in the true walk your speaking about. Your son is a con and you are totally blind of what your crying baby tells you. I seen it hundreds of times so don't feel stupid about your out of touch feelings. I rather you feel sorry for the victims and let TDCJ handle your thug child. That's right, he is a thug and that is why he is in prison, get over it. They all have a con game that is very good and learn how to play it to the fullest. Sorry mom, you been con. Every shift has an infirmary run, every request is documented. Medical, dentist, medications and yes if they have no money in their commissary the state places a little in it for them. The only ones getting ripped off is the tax payers. The best education for your baby is if you do the crime than shut up and do the time!

To the Mom: I understand your concern about your incarcerated child. I, too, am concerned about my child. My toddler, that is. Forgive those of us who would prefer our innocent babies who cannot make choices for themselves receive their medical needs before those who are adult enough to make those "mistakes." I would think you could understand that side of the situation as well.

TX DOC has the same mandate as the DOC in any other state. That mandate is Care, Custody, & Control of inmates. Inmates have to be provided with the same level of medical care that they would be free to seek if not incarcerated. Because they live in an isolated situation, the same as nursing home patients, they are not getting minute exposure to the virus. Thus, their immune systems do not get a chance to start building anti-bodies on their own. Plus, many have other health issues, that if they contract the H1N1; can lead to life-threatening illnesses. I have seen how quickly a single case of the regular flu can infect over 50% of the population; this puts extra stress on health care workers in the prison setting and extra stress on CO's. They have to accompany inmates to the infirmary. If the inmate has to be sent outside for care, they have to be accompanied by Security Staff. Those inmates who have underlying health issues need to have this vaccine, for the safety of everyone.

To Frank in Belton - thank you for a sincere and honest reply. I did not see the post that you refer to as "getting through" and I DO agree with what you are saying - there is an order to how things should be done. I guess what set me off were the "scumbag" and "animal" comments (seen on here previously). I just wish people would take a moment and think - as you said you were smart enough to do. Regardless of what an inmate has done (or perhaps not done but still accused and incarcerated) they are someone's Father, son, brother, mother, daughter or sister.

Good, they should not get this because there are people who have not committed crimes out there that really need this to protect themselves against this horrible virus. Inmates get to much as it is, my children are wonderful upstanding citizens working hard in school to make the grades to hopefully get a scholarship to go to school and further their education. But our government feels sorry for those who committ crimes and are in prison we give them everything at their finger tips and they do not have to pay for anything. I believe if the crime is bad enough to land them in prison, leave them there in a cell and only come out with they have to pull 10 hour shifts working in hot fields doing very hard manual labor. As you can tell I do not feel sorry for those, I work to hard for what I have and do not have any pitty on those who make choices to do the wrong thing. You wreap what you sew.
