The Central Texas Board of Selectors has chosen Dennis Stapleton to receive a 2005 Jefferson Award Medallion. Chief Dennis Stapleton heads fire and police services in Lacy Lakeview, Texas, obviously a full-time job but he was nominated by the District Director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association for his more than 15 years of volunteer service helping “Jerry’s Kids”. He’s been pledge center coordinator for the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon in Central Texas for the last five years. He has been president of the Heart of Texas District MDA Executive Advisory Committee for the last two years. The nomination letter calls Stapleton “a vital leader in the volunteer army that keeps MDA moving toward its goal of finding treatments and cures for 43 neuromuscular diseases.” Chief Stapleton, known to all on the telethon as “Denny”, has been instrumental in setting up and carrying out the annual Firefighter “Fill-The-Boot” campaign in both Woodway and Lacy Lakeview. He not only gives of his own time, he motivates many of his friends and co-workers to join him whenever needed. In addition to his service to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Dennis is very involved in his church, volunteers with Special Olympics and plays an active role in the Chamber of Commerce coordinating the annual Gethering on the Chisholm Trail . Chief Stapleton is also very involved in volunteer positions related to his work with fire and police. He is acting secretary of the Central Texas Police Association and serves on the boards of Texas Police Association, Connally Independent School District Advisory Board, Texas Fire Chiefs Association and the McLennan County Fire Protection Association. The nomination letter points out, “…his whole life is about giving back. In his profession he is a public servant. He lives his faith and serves those around him…by example and the way he motivates others.” |
