The Central Texas Board of Selectors has chosen Misty and Melinda Mosier to receive a 2006 Jefferson Award Medallion.
Two Central Texas sisters took a modest inheritance from their grandparents and in four years have turned it into a non-profit touching the lives of countless people in need.
Wishes Come True has become the life work of Misty and Melinda Mosier impacting the lives of children, the homeless, animals, seniors and the handicapped in so many ways.
Misty and Melinda volunteered two houses destined to be Wishes Come True training facilities as free housing for some handicapped families who fled hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The houses were renovated through the efforts of community volunteers inspired by the sisters to donate their time and resources to complete the houses.
One of the houses has been given, yes free of charge, to a single mom who suffers the physical handicap of having recently lost her right leg.
Her home and all her earthly belongings were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. She didn’t even have a wheelchair. She was forced to hop from place to place as she made her way from New Orleans to Houston to Dallas. The Mayor of Dallas asked for help. Potter’s House in Dallas made Misty and Melinda aware of this family’s plight. Thanks to Wishes Come True and the people who have helped, the single mom and her children are relocated just north of Waco. The girls are in school and have new bicycles and clothes. Mom now only has a wheelchair but an electric scooter. Misty and Melinda delivered a Christmas tree with all the decorations to adorn the family’s new home.
The other evacuee who fell into the loving arms of Wishes Come True is a 28 year old woman who lost her parents, sister, brother-in-law and husband to the hurricane. She has a 2 year old and a four year old but being the only surviving adult in her family, she has taken her older sister’s three children into her new home provided by Wishes Come True. Misty and Melinda give all the credit to the grace of God.
Letters of recommendation have been received from the Governor of Texas, Rick Perry, United States Senator John Cornyn, the Mayor of Clifton, their hometown and dozens of letters from people who have witnessed their selfless work. One letter recommending them to the Jefferson Awards calls the Mosier sisters “unsung heroes” who help the less fortunate and positively touch the lives of those who “have and have not” with their unselfish humanitarian acts.
The sisters' unselfish gifts have inspired businesses and individuals to step up to help the young women as they make Wishes Come True.
