The Central Texas Board of Selectors has chosen Debbie Busch to receive a 2006 Jefferson Award Medallion.
Debbie A. Busch has volunteered as a spouse of a soldier for over 24 years. She has led several Family Readiness Groups over the years at the Company, Battalion and Brigade levels.
Her crowning achievement has been her volunteer efforts in support of the Gold Star Families on Fort Hood and other army posts around the country. Gold Star Families are the survivors of soldiers killed in action. The army has a procedure to take care of the loved ones after a soldier is killed.
Debbie started HUGSS, Helping Unite Gold Star Survivors in October 2003 as a follow up to her friendship with a fellow army spouse who lost her husband. Debbie began to realize there was something missing for families after the ceremonies were over. A real sense of abandonment set in for Gold Star Families. To help, Debbie started a bereavement support group on Fort Hood. She was part of a team that was the driving force behind the creation of a 40-hour training course for Casualty Assistance Officers and introducing actual Gold Star survivors to the course.
Debbie was part of a team that led the Commander of III Corps and Fort Hood to create a Bereavement Support Office for Gold Star Families. The model has been sent to FORSCOM in the hope it will be adopted army wide. Debbie has spent over 1,000 hours in the past year but her efforts are resulting in changes in army policy. Debbie is still personally involved with individual families. She calls family members on a regular basis and remembers birthdays and anniversary with greeting cards.
In April 2004 The White House notified Fort Hood that President Bush wanted to meet with Gold Star Families. Debbie was called on to contact the Gold Star Families and assist with the reception for the president. Thirty-Five families met individually with President Bush and Debbie was right there supporting the families. Since the president’s visit, she has been working full time in the process of making things better for army families after the loss of a loved one. Debbie is described in the nomination letters as “truly a person who goes above and beyond what any one person should do.”
