Ralph Bowler Save Email Print

The Central Texas Board of Selectors has chosen Ralph Bowler to receive a 2006 Jefferson Award Medallion. Retirement means different things to different people. To some its looking forward to escaping the pressures of the work day world in order to enjoy time for themselves. For a very few, retirement means more time to dedicate to helping others. That is what Ralph Bowler has done since his “retirement” in 1999 and the thousands of people his life has touched wince then will be forever grateful. Ralph volunteers in a variety of community activities. He’s a driver for the press corps when President Bush comes home to Crawford. He sorts and hangs clothes as a volunteer at the Family Abuse Center and Compassion Ministries. He’s a volunteer tour guide at the Mayborn Museum Complex, a judge at the Central Texas Science and Engineering Fair in Waco, a volunteer in the Emergency Department of Providence Hospital and helped convert the old Robinson Elementary School into the Greater Robinson Area Katrina Relief Center. Ralph is a charter member of the Bethel Methodist Church of Robinson and volunteers for almost every project the church has begun since 1987. One nomination letter from his church said, “the behind-the-scene activity is where Ralph spends many hours of his time. He quietly and without recognition is always doing work for the church. He can be seen cleaning up, washing dishes, and folding tables after church luncheons and frequently does yard work and other outside work to enhance the appearance of our church—with a group, or simply because he notices that it needs to be done. “
