Are You Prepared For A Disaster?
Why is the first hour crucial to your business after a flood or natural disaster?
The steps you take immediately after disaster strikes will determine whether you’ll be able to get back in business quickly. Taking the right actions in the first hour could put your business back on its feet with little delay or interruption in operations.
If your business falls victim to a fire, after calling 911, who should you call next?
Your insurance agent. The more quickly you set your claim in progress, the more quickly you’ll be able to get back in business.
How can an extra set of keys to your business can help save your building in a disaster?
If disaster strikes, having an extra set of keys to give to emergency responders could mean the difference between limited damage and major destruction. Be sure you have a set that includes keys for every locked door in your building.
Do you know how to pack an emergency kit for your family?
Pack according to location and the types of disasters that could strike. First, however, be sure you have a waterproof container, which doesn’t have to be expensive, but does have to be watertight. Next take stock of the specific things you may need including medications, both prescription and nonprescription. Be sure to include the basics, too—first aid supplies, blankets for warmth, enough water for a gallon per person for at least three days, flashlights and extra batteries, a wrench or other tool you can use to turn off the water and natural gas in your home, a supply of canned food and other nonperishable items, extra clothing and matches and lighters, garbage bags for trash and human waste, paper towels and toilet paper.
If your water is cut off in a disaster, where can you find 30 gallons of clean drinking water without leaving your home or business?
Check the water heater! But be sure you turn off the gas or electric heating element before you try to empty it.
In the event of a power outage, how can you light your home at night without using up flashlight batteries?
If you have solar powered landscape lights, leave them outside during the day to soak up the sun, and then bring them inside at night to light up your home.
