Dr. George Smith is a man with a mission. He is a well-trained physician who sacrifices money, safety, time and comfort in service to his fellow man. He has been the team doctor for Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshman football and basketball games for boys and girls as well as volleyball, softball and baseball of West Independent School District.
He provides medical help not only for the players of West but for opposing teams at home games. He travels, at his own expense, to out of town games. Dr. Smith has missed only two varsity games in the past eight years. He missed those games because he was serving as a FEMA physician following hurricane Katrina.
Dr. Smith helped found West Volunteer Ambulance Service providing the medical training for the community volunteers. He continues to serve as Volunteer Medical Director answering emergency calls right along with the volunteers he trained.
Dr. Smith is Vice President of the West Hospital Authority Board, distinguished past president of the Kiwanis Club of West, immediate past president of the Texas Medical Director’s Association, member of the Board of Directors of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association and a member of the Medicaid Advisory Committee for the state of Texas.
As a young doctor, he chose to serve a rural community where people needed his dedicated care and untiring service. Dr. Smith betrays his passion when he says, “helping others is my life, it is my mission.”
Dr. Smith was chosen to be a Torch Bearer for the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. Their message, “Light the Fire Within”, is the message he delivers daily. Dr. Smith has seen the need and answered the call on numerous fronts. Using his medical skills and visionary talent, he has helped alleviate pain and suffering while creating organizations and plans to make his community better able to serve people in need.
