BEIJING (July 18, 2014) A powerful typhoon killed at least one person and damaged several houses Friday on the southern Chinese island of Hainan after claiming 54 lives in the Philippines.
Typhoon Rammasun made landfall on Hainan southwest of Hong Kong with winds as high as 130 miles per hour.
The official Xinhua News Agency said Rammasun is the most powerful storm in at least nine years and possibly since 1973.
