(November 16, 2007)--The death toll from a cyclone that's struck the coast of Bangladesh continues to climb.

United News of Bangladesh is reporting at least 1,100 people have been killed, after the cyclone slammed into the coast with 150 mile-per-hour winds Thursday.

Aid workers say remote villages in low-lying areas have been swamped by a storm surge and isolated by debris.

They have been struggling to get food and medicine to survivors.

Some 650,000 villagers have been evacuated.

The government has acknowledged it's having trouble keeping count of the casualties.

Power is out and phone lines are down in most remote areas.

The government's disaster agency earlier put the official death toll at 242, but warned it could rise significantly.
