Houston Using Federal Grant To Step Up Security In Evacuee Areas

Houston is using 20 million dollars in federal funding to enhance security at more than 50 apartment developments with heavy concentrations of Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

Police officials say they're assigning liaison officers to work
with tenants and managers to fight crime in the areas. The money
will also pay for overtime and increased patrols.

The money is part of a 60 million dollar allocation of Community
Development Block Grant funds intended to help Houston and Harris
County pay for Hurricane Katrina recovery.

One advocacy group for the poor -- the Texas Low-Income Housing
Information Service -- says the money should be used to address
long-term housing assistance for evacuees, rather than law
enforcement.

As many as 200,000 evacuees went to Houston in fall 2005.
