Residents Hope To Return Home After Levee Break
Hundreds of residents forced out of their homes by a weekend levee break are dreading what they’ll find when they return to their residences.

(January 7, 2008)--More residents who fled nearly 300 homes in Fernley, Nev. are hoping to return home, but many are dreading what they'll find.

There are homes that have been sitting in as much as 8 feet of water after a canal's earthen bank collapsed and sent a wave of water into the town.

Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons says the canal was not full when the bank failed.

Some residents were permitted to return Sunday, and authorities are hoping that more will return as the water recedes.

One woman says she like many in the town doesn't have flood insurance.

Authorities say an initial assessment found 290 homes received varying amounts of flood damage.
