(April, 9 2008) – High sulfur dioxide levels from Kilauea (kil-uh-WAY'-uh) volcano have forced evacuations on Hawaii's Big Island.

The chief ranger at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park says the park has been closed, and guests and staff of the Volcano House hotel had to get out.

Outside the park, officials have recommended that residents of five communities evacuate. One school has been closed.

Elevated levels of sulfur dioxide can cause breathing problems, especially among people with respiratory conditions such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis.

Kilauea has been erupting since 1983.
