President Bush Visits Greensburg, Kansas, one year after the deadly tornado Save Email Print

A | A | A

(May, 5 2008) – It's a commencement day the Class of 2008 in Greensburg, Kansas, will remember for a long time.

President Bush showed up to hand out diplomas to 18 high school graduates. The visit came one year to the day after a devastating tornado barreled through Greensburg, killing 11 people and leveling an estimated 95 percent of the town, including the school.

In his remarks at the temporary high school gym, the president said: "We celebrate the resurgence of a town that stood tall when its buildings and homes were laid low."

Bush said the graduating class has sent a powerful message to the nation: "Greensburg, Kansas, is back and its best days are ahead."

This was the president's second visit to Greensburg; he showed up five days after the tornado struck.

He sure took his time to visit them. And I agree Jimmy. I'll be glad when Bush leaves the White House. Although I dislike the three canidates running for President....

Funny thing. The EF5 did less damage to the town's economy than Bush.

Special Weather Features
Slight chance of T-storms north!
From Lon Curtis:

A weak cool front has sagged south into northeastern Texas, and now stretches from near Wichita Falls to near Lufkin, leaving all of the News10 area on the dry, hot side of the front. A north to northwest flow aloft is creating a favorable pattern for showers and thunderstorms to move along the front, but so far, that activity has remained clear of Central Texas. The computer models suggest that a few widely scattered showers and thunderstorms may creep into our northern counties late this afternoon and again Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, the remainder of the area has no chance for rain, and temperatures will be hot and the weather dry through Saturday.

There is a broad spread of model solutions for the Sunday through Wednesday period, with some models showing beneficial rainfall over our area. For the present, we will stick with persistence, which means we doubt that those models are correct. I don't often say this, but I hope I'm wrong!
