(May, 5 2008) – It's a commencement day the Class of 2008 in Greensburg, Kansas, will remember for a long time.
President Bush showed up to hand out diplomas to 18 high school graduates. The visit came one year to the day after a devastating tornado barreled through Greensburg, killing 11 people and leveling an estimated 95 percent of the town, including the school.
In his remarks at the temporary high school gym, the president said: "We celebrate the resurgence of a town that stood tall when its buildings and homes were laid low."
Bush said the graduating class has sent a powerful message to the nation: "Greensburg, Kansas, is back and its best days are ahead."
This was the president's second visit to Greensburg; he showed up five days after the tornado struck.
