First UN Relief Flight Arrives in Myanmar Save Email Print

A | A | A

(May, 8 2008) – The U.N.'s World Food Program says one of its relief planes has landed in Myanmar as part of the first major international airlift of aid to cyclone victims.

A U.N. official says a plane from Italy arrived in Myanmar, and three more are to land later in the day. The official says the planes are bringing key relief items including high-energy biscuits and medical kits.

The planes had waited on the tarmac for the last two days to get the junta's clearance to bring in relief supplies to the devastated Southeast Asian country. It's feared the death toll from Saturday's storm will climb to as many as 100,000 people.

A Much Nicer Day Ahead!
From Keith Cavey:

The last of the thunderstorms are finally pulling away from Central Texas after leaving behind almost three inches of rain and reports of wind damage in parts of the area. Our westernmost counties are already clear this morning, and we should see those clear skies spread across the rest of Central Texas by noon today. Winds will pick up from the northwest as a cold front brings much drier air into the region, with wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour this afternoon.

The weather should stay nice the rest of this week, although we will feel an increase in humidity beginning late Friday or Saturday. That's going to set up another chance for rain early next week as another cold front moves toward Central Texas, perhaps bringing us a shot of cooler weather by next Tuesday!
