Severe Storms Hit Southeast Save Email Print

A | A | A

(May, 9 2008) – Parts of the Southeast are dealing with a battering from severe storms.

Damage and at least one fatality are reported in a number of states from Mississippi to Virginia. Tornado warnings were issued late Thursday for parts of Virginia, including communities outside
Washington.

In North Carolina, one person was killed and three others injured in a tornado that swept at least three tractor-trailers off an interstate near Greensboro.

An apparent tornado wrecked a furniture store in Tupelo, Mississippi, during the day Thursday. Strong winds flipped a mobile home in Alabama. And at least four houses and a few barns were damaged in south-central Tennessee.

Students in more than a dozen school districts in Alabama were sent home early and others were kept late while storm squalls passed. A car dealership employee in Hamilton, Alabama, describes it as "pretty good wind, with lightning and thunder and rain blowing sideways."

Humid Holiday Weekend Ahead!
From Rusty Garrett:

Rain and embedded thunderstorms popped up in the afternoon heat Friday. The trend of dissipating coverage and intensity remains in place after dark with humid air overnight.

Another very warm, humid day is expected Saturday as we start the Labor Day holiday weekend. Again Saturday, there will be a slight chance of mainly afternoon and evening showers and isolated thunderstorms. A similar pattern is also Sunday, although the activity on Sunday may be more isolated. Right now, Labor Day appears likely to be rain-free.

Gustav has regained hurricane intensity while moving toward the Cayman Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. The storm is expected to cross the western tip of Cuba Saturday, and emerge into the southern Gulf of Mexico Sunday. The extended guidance from the National Hurricane Center brings Gustav close to the Louisiana coast early next week. It is still too early to predict where landfall will occur.
