(July 8, 2008)—Hurricane was a Category One Storm Tuesday afternoon after starting the day with a lot more punch.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Bertha was about 620 miles east-northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands and about 900 miles southeast of Bermuda.

The hurricane is moving toward the northwest at about 12 miles per hour, but it’s expected to make a gradual turn toward the north-northwest and to slow down over the next several days.

Bertha had maximum sustained winds of about 85 miles per hour with higher gusts.

Additional weakening is expected over the next 24 hours, forecasters said.
Bermuda could begin to feel the effects late tomorrow with large swells and high surf, forecasters said.

As Bertha moved over the open Atlantic, it strengthened into a Category Three storm, but forecasters said they expected it to weaken.
