(July 15, 2008)--Tropical Storm Bertha was out over the open Atlantic Ocean Tuesday after battering Bermuda.
The storm knocked out electricity to thousands of customers on the British tourist island.
Bermuda's weather service canceled a hurricane watch for the island late Monday, but a tropical storm watch remained in effect Tuesday.
Ron Smith, a carpenter who moved to Bermuda about a year ago from the English city of Stoke-on-Trent, described the broad storm's passage as "harrowing."
The storm whipped up dangerous rip currents along the U.S. East Coast from the Carolinas through southern New England, which contributed to at least one drowning off a New Jersey beach.
Bertha is expected to re-strengthen into a hurricane Tuesday.
Maximum sustained winds were 70-miles-per-hour Tuesday morning.
