(July 15, 2008)--Cooler weather and higher humidity were letting fire crews get a better handle on wildfires across California Tuesday.
It's been more than three weeks since lightning sparked nearly 1,800 separate fires.
Officials now say most of those are out and some of the biggest fires are nearly contained, including a complex of Butte County blazes, which have consumed 84 square miles and destroyed dozens of homes.
Those fires are 75 percent contained.
In Mendocino County, flames are 90 percent contained after scorching about 83 square miles, but new mandatory evacuations and road closures are being planned near the Los Padres National Forest.
Fire crews are gearing up for a controlled burn targeting a wildfire that initially threatened the Big Sur area but has now changed course.
