(July 21, 2008) A hurricane watch was issued Monday morning for the Texas coast from Brownsville northward to Port O’Connor as Tropical Storm Dolly moved over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
A tropical storm watch is in effect for the Texas coast from Port O’Connor northward to San Luis Pass.
The government of Mexico, meanwhile, issued a hurricane watch Monday from Rio San Fernando northward to the U.S. border and a tropical storm watch from La Pesca northward to Rio San Fernando.
Monday morning, Dolly’s center was about 55 miles north-northeast of Progresso, Mexico and the storm was moving toward the west-northwest at near 18 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds near 50 miles per hour.
Forecasters say Dolly could become a hurricane by Tuesday and that it could approach Mexican Gulf Coast by Wednesday.
Dolly hit the storm-prone Yucatan Peninsula with heavy rains and high winds Monday.
The governor of Quintana Roo state ordered the evacuation of small, low-lying islands Banco Chinchorro and Punta Allen as a precaution.
Residents were stocking up on food and fuel, while some hotels were still monitoring the storm closely before taking any measures.
