(July 29, 2008)--Authorities in New Mexico say they rescued 180 people stranded by a swollen river, using a pulley system fitted with a basket to slide people across the Rio Ruidoso,
Authorities recovered the body of a 20-year-old man from the river Monday, after he was swept away by flash flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Dolly.
Officials estimate flooding damaged as many as 500 buildings.
Hundreds have been evacuated from homes, cabins and campsites.
As much as nine inches of rain has fallen in the area since Friday.
Flash flood watches are in effect across much of eastern New Mexico.
Gov. Bill Richardson has declared Lincoln County a disaster area.
