(August 19, 2008)—Federal agencies are distributing 182,000 weather alert radios to schools across the country.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the current effort will provide the radios to preschools, Head Start programs, school district offices and nonpublic schools and offices.

Nearly 100,000 public elementary and secondary schools across the country received radios in earlier phases of the distribution.

The NOAA Public Alert Radios sound an alarm automatically to warn of weather hazards and other emergencies.

NOAA is distributing the radios with funding from the Department of Homeland Security and assistance from the departments of Education and Health and Human Services.
