(August 20, 2008)--Authorities were warning of possible flash floods and landslides after a powerful typhoon packing winds of 87 miles per hour slammed the northern Philippines on Wednesday.

Heavy rain caused havoc in the capital of Manila, where roads flooded and schools were closed.

The eye of Typhoon Nuri, which brought gusts of up to 106 miles per hour, skirted the northeastern tip of the archipelago in Cagayan province, but its outer bands engulfed most of the mountainous northern provinces where storm alerts were issued.

Taiwan issued a typhoon warning on Tuesday for ships travelling through its southern waters.

If Nuri stays on its current course, the island could be affected Thursday morning, the Central Weather Bureau said.

It's the second time the region has been battered by typhoons in recent months.

In June a typhoon killed more than 500 people across the Philippines, along with more than 850 passengers and crew of a ferry that capsized off central Sibuyan Island on June 21.
