(August 21, 2008)--At least 74 people have been killed by heavy monsoon rains lashing northern India, police say.
A Uttar Pradesh state police spokesman says that most of the deaths were caused by poorly constructed buildings collapsing under the deluge.
The Hindu holy city of Varanasi received the most rain with 11.5 inches falling in 24 hours.
Meteorological officials are predicting more rain in the next few days.
Monsoon season, which lasts from June to September in India, delivers rain vital for the country's farmers but also massive destruction.
Floods, mudslides, house collapses and lightning strikes have killed more than 300 people across the country so far this year.
