(August 25, 2008)—Tropical Storm Gustav formed Monday in the central Caribbean and it’s headed toward Haiti.
Monday afternoon, the storm’s center was about 225 miles south-southeast of Port Au Prince, Haiti, and Gustav was moving toward the northwest at about 14 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds near 60 miles per hour.
On the current track, the storm’s center will be near or over southwestern Haiti on Tuesday, forecasters said.
The government of the Dominican Republic has issued a hurricane warning for the south coast from Santo Domingo westward to the southern Border of Haiti, and a hurricane warning is now in effect for the southwest peninsula of Haiti from the border with the Dominican Republic and Port Au Prince westward.
The storm is expected to dump as much as 7 inches of rain on Hispaniola with isolated totals of as much as 25 inches possible.
