(October, 14 2008) – California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in two Southern California counties where fierce wildfires are threatening homes and triggering evacuations.
The wildfires in the San Fernando Valley have burned nearly 10,000 acres. A homeless man died and another person was killed in a freeway crash as fire brought traffic to a halt.
Residents are being warned to they may have to leave their homes with little notice.
Winds dropped Monday evening but may roar back to life overnight.
In San Diego County, a wildfire that began on an explosives training range at Camp Pendleton had grown to more than 1,500 acres by nightfall and forced the evacuation of 1,400 homes.
