Dry Conditions Could Fuel Fires In The South
Wildfires have scorched fewer acres than in 2006, which was a record year, but dry conditions don’t bode well for the winter fire outlook.

(December 1, 2008)-- Wildfires have scorched fewer acres than in 2006, which was a record year, but dry conditions don’t bode well for the winter fire outlook.

So far this year, fires across the south have burned 2.3 million acres, compared to the historic high of 2.6 million in 2006, according to figures that were part of a wildfire outlook released Monday by the National Interagency Fire Center.

The outlook says dry conditions in parts of south-central Texas and Oklahoma are expected to create or worsen the above normal potential for significant fires this winter.

It also says the warm, dry conditions forecasters are predicting also are expected to increase the potential for significant fires across most of Florida from January through March.

As of Sunday, nearly 5.3 million acres had burned nationally.
