(December 15, 2008)—A rare avalanche at Utah's Snowbird resort has claimed the life of a skier.
A spokeswoman for University Hospital in Salt Lake City said the woman in her 20s died Sunday after she was pulled off Mount Baldy.
Searchers initially feared other skiers were buried as well, but Sheriff Jim Winder said he's confident the woman was the only victim.
Avalanche deaths are rare at Western resorts where the Ski Patrol routinely triggers slides to prevent them from occurring naturally.
